Training shoes?

Postby Kuroyama on Tue Jan 15, 2008 1:53 pm

Ive been a wearer of Feiyues for a few years. Ive still got about 3-4 pairs unused in the closet... in all fariness though, I live in Japan so I buy them in bulk...

But what shoes do YOU train in?

I like Asics Budokan because they're really low and flat. They're good for indoor training, but when I'm working outside, any pair of sneakers will do!

Dailies tend to have a higher sole than I care to train in. Some low-top Converse seem like the obvious go to...but if Im not mistaken they were bought by Nike and now a $15 pair of shoes is sold for $45. I refuse to support that business model.

Further...Ive heard that Converse gets slippery on grass, though I havent bought a pair to confirm.

Heres a cute piece of info:

I live in Japan.
I wear a size 13(US), or 30(JP). I really want to get some ASICS/Onitsuka Tiger low soled shoes... but even though its a Japanese company... they dont sell my size here in Japan.

They also refuse to export from the US to Japan.

They also wont sell to me directly from the factory in Japan.

Im pretty much bummed out by THAT business model.

OK, before I bought cheap pair of sport shoes - they fell apart in the month. Then I bought another one - same result. I went to the Internet and bought special taijiquan shoes - they fell apart afte two month. After a while I got tired and picked up two pairs of Converse $29.99 each at Costco. Since than I have no need to buy new shoes for taiji practice anymore for over a year:) Now tell me that my $60 were invested bad? I have spent more money on cheap junky shoes !

Oh no!

I wouldnt say that Converse is bad. One person told me they slipped... that doesnt mean everybody will. Also... $30 doesnt seem like a bad price. Id prefer $15, but its not 1976 anymore ;)

anyway... Im glad its working for you. If I can find a pair to try here, Ill give them a try.

BTW, Feiyue isnt a bad shoe, it can just wear out a little fast if I train on bricks instead of grass.

Barefoot sifu

Postby jb on Wed Jan 16, 2008 7:16 pm

I used to spend a lot of time trying out different kinds of shoes and socks. It's just personal taste isn't it?
One of my sifus practises in barefeet in the studio, and now I do likewise. It feels good. Very grounded.

One drawback, however, is that when my feet sweat -- they stick to the floor. Ugh.
