Hi tremord,
And welcome to the board. There are several version of taijiquan origins. Most historians are leaning toward Chen linage vesrion which supported by multiple historical facts. According to Chen village linage taijiquan was created/brought by Chen Wangting, retired officer of Ming Dynasty army. Long-handle Broadsword Spring & Autumn also known as guan dao was part of army training; therefore, Chen Wangting adapted this weapon for the taijiquan routine. In other words, guan dao and spear were original weapons which belong to Chen Taijiquan since the very beginning .

P.S. As you probably know the in Chinese orthodox army the first weapon of choice always was a long weapons - not short one such as swords. Sword was always considered as secondary weapon and mainly used for close combat (for example in narrow urban area). If you closely inspect Chen bare hand routine you may realize that it actually has come from long weapon. Similarly, xingyi has come from spear..
